Curators: Kirby Gookin & Robin Kahn

Kirby Gookin is an art historian (NYU, SVA, and University of Hawaii), critic, curator and public artist. He has contributed articles and reviews for Artforum, Artscribe, Arts Magazine, Interview, Parkett as well as for gallery and museum publications; most recently the 33 year history of Creative Time (Princeton Architectural Press). He is preparing a book on the latent eugenic motivations behind current genetic technologies. His exhibition of video works ...pero si sólo estaba acutando (...but I was only acting!), was recently presented at the Museo Nacionales Centro de Arte, Reina Sofia, Madrid.

Robin Kahn is a visual artist who exhibits internationally. She works in a variety of genres which include such D.I.Y. practices as mail art, artist books, and sound works. Kahn performs regularly on WFMU's Intelligent Design with Kenny G. Her installation Everybody Needs a Wife was recently exhibited at Mulry Fine Art (Palm Beach, FL) and her artist book Intelligent Women's Guide to Art at Printed Matter.

Together they collaborate on curatorial and public art projects that address the constraints of art world commercialism. In 1991 they formed SOS Int'l, a publishing collective that treats books as public space creating such anti-copyright anthologies as Special Issue, Promotional Copy and Time Capsule: A Concise Encyclopedia by Women Artists. With Victoria Gil and Federico Guzmán, they formed the collectives Agencia de Viaje and Gratis to produce interventions that provide the public a platform for self-expression: Cápsula de Tiempo Córdoba, Isla del Copyright, Copiacabana, Copilandia. Their curatorial experiments include Disappearing Act, (Leslie Tonkonow and Bound & Unbound, NY, which lasted until that last work disappeared), and Get Off! an exploration of sexuality in contemporary art at The Museum of Sex, NY. They hope you will come and participate in the surprises offered by FREE SHOW.
